Insuring Your Blackjack Bets

If you think insurance is only for your car, home, appliances, business or for yourself, think again. Expert blackjack players have been using the advantasge to taking insurance on their blackjack bets.

What does insurance mean in blackjack? Insurance means the blackjack player makes another bet, which could amount to half of his original bet. A player may only take insurance in blackjack when one of the dealer's card is an ace.

In blackjack, after the dealer gave two cards to each player, he deals himself with two cards. One of the cards will be face down, which is called the hole card, and the other card is dealt face up.

If the card dealt face up is an ace, that is the time that the blackjack player may take insurance. The player takes an insurance when he feels that there is a huge probability that the hole card (the one which is face down) is a card with a value of ten, thus, giving the dealer a blackjack.

When a player bets on insurance, his bet is placed on a different portion of the blackjack table. The bet on the insurance pays two to one. This is called insurance because if the blackjack dealer has a blackjack or a natural, the blackjack dealer pays the player two to one on the player's insurance bet. So even if the blackjack player loses the hand because the dealer's hand is a blackjack, no money is lost.

On the other hand, if the dealer doesn't have a blackjack, the player loses the insurance bet, but he may still win the blackjack bet if the sum of his cards is higher than that of the dealer's.

It is important that before a blackjack player bets on insurance, he has calculated the probability that the hole card is a card with a value of ten. If he feels that this is so, that is the best time that he should bet on insurance.

This is one of the reasons that being observant can work to your advantage when playing blackjack. A player has to keep track which cards were already dealt and which cards could still be in the deck.

Here's a word of caution, though. Never let anyone know that you are counting the cards. Worse, never use any counting device in keeping track of the cards that were already dealt. Some casinos may be a bit strict regarding blackjack cards counting which is why you have to do this discreetly.
